New WHO Review of Mental Health & Reproduction

By casm - Posted on 29 July 2009

The recent report Mental health aspects of women’s reproductive health: a global literature review has highlighted issues related to the development and onset of depression and other mental health disorders that are related to reproduction. This review is probably the most comprehensive literature review on this topic to date, covering available research from developing to developed countries, examining the different challenges and research gaps in each setting. What is overwhelmingly clear from the studies highlighted, is that obstetric intervention in a range of circumstances, is strongly associated with depression and mood disorders such as Anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

While gender-based violence was significantly addressed, significantly absent was any suggestion that this could occur within a health care setting. If we are to adequately address causes of PTSD and depression resulting from childbirth experiences, perhaps we highlight with women’s and civil rights organisations that gender-based violence within the hospital system exists and should not be tolerated.
